Lucy at Ethiopia's National Museum: 8 Things to Know on an Addis Ababa Layover
Short answer. The Lucy on show at the National Museum of Ethiopia is a cast: the original bones sit in a purpose-built safe in the museum's palaeoanthropology laboratories. You still see her full shape, in the basement, beside the story of her 1974 find. The pattern is simple. Every itinerary that names the museum gives it exactly one hour, and most put the entry fee in the fare. The only exceptions are the customisable tour, which offers the museum as an alternative to another stop, and the English and German guide tour, which names no stops at all but includes entrance tickets to museums, churches and palaces.

The four-hour layover city tour is the shortest way to see her with the entry already paid. If you want the order of the day to bend around your flight, a private layover tour lets you ask for the museum first.
1. The Lucy in the case is a cast
The real Lucy is stored in a specially constructed safe in the palaeoanthropology laboratories of the museum. The originals are not permanently exhibited, even there. What stands in the glass case downstairs is a cast of her bones, mounted as a standing skeleton.
Casts are how fragile fossils are usually shown, and this one still gives you her full shape and scale, beside the story of the find. The calendar, the eucalyptus and the other things that catch travellers out are on facts that surprise layover visitors.
2. Who she was: 3.18 million years, 40 per cent of a skeleton
- Age: just under 3.18 million years.
- Found: 24 November 1974, at Hadar in the Afar Triangle, by Donald Johanson and Tom Gray.
- How much of her: 47 bones, 40 per cent of a single skeleton, out of several hundred fragments recovered.
- Size: about three and a half feet tall and 60 to 65 pounds.
- Species: Australopithecus afarensis.
3. Two names: a Beatles song and Dinkʼinesh
She was named on the night of the find, while "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" played over and over in the camp. In Amharic she is Dinkʼinesh, which means you are marvellous.
4. She has left Ethiopia twice, and is not expected to again soon
Her first trip abroad was a six-year tour of the United States, from 2007 to 2013. The second was Prague, where the National Museum of the Czech Republic showed her from 25 August to 23 October 2025 alongside Selam. It was the first time either had been in Europe, and the first time the two were shown together; 210,441 people came.
They flew home to Addis Ababa on 30 October 2025. The Ethiopian side does not plan to lend them abroad again in the coming years, so this building is where you see her.

5. Lucy is not the only famous fossil in the building
- Selam (DIK-1-1) is a child of Lucy's species, about 3.3 million years old, found in 2000 at Dikika by a team led by Zeresenay Alemseged. She went to Prague with Lucy, lent by the same institution.
- Ardi (Ardipithecus ramidus) is about 4.4 million years old, found in 1994 at Aramis in the Middle Awash by a team led by Tim White. Her bones were so fragile that the team lifted whole blocks of stone and earth, brought them to the museum and excavated them there.
The museum itself grew out of the Institute of Archaeology, established in 1958, and stands near Addis Ababa University.
6. Four floors, and an hour covers Lucy and one of them
- Basement: archaeology and palaeoanthropology, where Lucy is.
- First floor: ancient and medieval objects, with the regalia and memorabilia of former rulers, Haile Selassie among them.
- Second floor: art from traditional to contemporary, plus crafts: weapons, jewellery, utensils, clothing and musical instruments.
- Third floor: ethnography.

Two operators state that the museum closes on Mondays. The four-hour flexible city tour plans for it: on a Monday it visits the Ethnological Museum instead, in Haile Selassie's former palace. That is a fair swap, but it is not Lucy.
Useful tip: Check your arrival day against the Monday closure before you book. If Lucy is the reason you are leaving the airport, a Monday connection is the one to spend airside or on a different route. The layover timing rules cover the other clocks that decide a day.
8. Who pays the entry fee
On most tours the fare covers the museum. The full-day tour with hotel pickup includes every entrance fee except the Mount Entoto viewpoint, which costs US$10 per person. The private full-day tour with lunch charges a US$15 per-person supplement covering Holy Trinity Cathedral, St George's Cathedral and the Ethnological Museum, and says nothing either way about this one.
