Why the shared minivan is the one people book
This is the most-reviewed guided day in the city by a wide margin, and the reason is
arithmetic rather than marketing. A private car in Addis Ababa costs the same whether
one person or six are in it. A shared seat costs the same whether you are alone or in a
couple. If you are one or two people, the shared day is simply the cheaper way to get
seven stops and a guide.
What you give up is control of the clock. The route runs a fixed shape and a fixed
order, so a late inbound is harder to absorb than it would be in a private car. What
you gain, beyond the fare, is a Blue Badge guide and a minivan with air conditioning
rather than whatever the cheapest private option happens to send.
The stop list is also unusually complete. Seven stops in six to seven hours is a
full day rather than a half day with extras, and it includes both museums, both
churches and the market. Very few full-day products in Addis Ababa manage all of
those.
The day, hour by hour
- Pickup. From Bole, your hotel, or a meeting point you choose. The
day ends back where it started.
- National Museum of Ethiopia, one hour. Lucy in the basement, then
whichever of the three floors above her you have time for.
- Mount Entoto, one hour. The climb through the eucalyptus and the
view back over the plain. The viewpoint fee is the one extra.
- Ethnological Museum, one hour. Inside the old imperial palace, on
the university's Sidist Kilo campus.
- Piassa, forty minutes. Lunch, in the quarter the Italians built.
- St George's Cathedral, one hour. Octagonal, 1911, and burnt by the
occupation in 1937.
- Mercato, forty minutes. The largest open-air market in Africa, with
a guide who knows which lane is which.
- Tiglachin Memorial, thirty minutes. The last stop before the road
back to the terminal.
Who this suits, and who should book something else
It suits you if
- You are travelling alone or as a couple, and the per-person fare works in your
favour.
- You have eight hours or more and want a genuinely full day rather than a
highlights run.
- You want both museums, both churches and the market in one go.
- You want a stated wheelchair-accessible vehicle — this listing states one.

Where it collects you
The operator's own note is broad: they collect at the airport, at an apartment, and
at any other place a traveller asks for. You can also head straight to a meeting point
of your choosing instead of requesting a pickup, and the day ends back at whichever you
picked.
Practically, for a layover the answer is the airport. Bole's arrivals hall has a
single exit, which makes it the simplest meeting point in the city — see

Know before you go
- The National Museum closes on Mondays. Ask the operator to reorder
the day if your flight lands on one.
- Mercato closes on Sundays. A Sunday route swaps it for something
else; say so when you book.
- The Entoto fee is cash. Ten dollars a head, on the day, on top of
the fare.
- The party is capped at fifteen. Book early in high season rather
than on the day.
- Dress code is smart casual and two churches are on the route, so
cover shoulders and knees.
- Say if you are vegetarian. A vegetarian option is available at the
lunch stop when you flag it at booking.
Give them the flight number, not the layover length. It lets the operator plan against your real arrival time and your real departure rather than against a figure you worked out yourself.

Is this a private tour?
No. It is a shared minivan capped at fifteen travellers, and the fare is per person rather than per vehicle. That cap is what holds the price down, and for one or two people it is the cheapest way to get a full day.
Is the Mount Entoto viewpoint really extra?
Yes, and it is the one exception on an otherwise all-inclusive fare. The listing includes every entrance fee except the Entoto viewpoint, which is ten dollars a head paid on the day. Carry small notes for it.
