Why the per-group fare changes the maths
Almost every layover departure out of Bole is priced per person. This one is priced per vehicle, for up to six travellers, and that single difference reverses the whole comparison. A family of four pays forty dollars a head for a private car with a guide, a cooked lunch and eight stops. The same family on a per-person full day pays close to seventy each, on a shared minivan.
Below three people it stops being the cheaper option and becomes the more comfortable one. Above three it is both. The break-even sits at about two and a half travellers, which is a strange sentence but a useful one when you are deciding.
The other thing a private car buys here is the order of the day. Addis Ababa's traffic is the constraint on any full-day route, and a guide who can decide on the morning whether to run the ridge first or the market first is worth an hour of your day.

- Mercato, one hour. A guided walk through the spice, food and textile sections.
- The Ethnological Museum, one hour. Inside Haile Selassie's Gennete Le'ul palace.
- National Museum of Ethiopia, one hour. Lucy, and the imperial regalia upstairs.
- Holy Trinity Cathedral, one hour. The 1942 cathedral, and the memorials in its grounds.
- Meskel Square, ten minutes. The city's parade ground, and the last stop before Bole.

Where it collects you
Bole. The operator sends instructions for meeting your guide at the airport with the booking, and the car is private to your party from that moment. A hotel pickup is available in the same way if you have already come into the city.

Know before you go
- Monday closes the National Museum and Sunday closes Mercato. Give the operator your date and they will reorder.
- Carry US$15 a head in cash for the three doors that charge separately.
- Two hours at 3,200 metres. Go steadily, especially on the day you land.
- The vehicle is not wheelchair accessible and infants must sit on laps.
- Two cathedrals on the route. Cover shoulders and knees, and expect to remove shoes inside.
- Say how many are coming. The fare covers up to six; a seventh changes the quote.

Is the price really for the whole car?
Yes. The listing quotes it per group for up to six people rather than per person. Two travellers pay eighty dollars each in effect; six pay under thirty. That is the reverse of how a shared seat prices.
What is the fifteen-dollar supplement?
Entrance fees at three doors: Holy Trinity Cathedral at about ten dollars, St George's Cathedral at about three, and the Ethnological Museum at about two. It is per person, paid on the day, and it is the only extra.
Is lunch really included?
Yes, and it is a home-cooked Ethiopian meal rather than a stop at a restaurant with a bill. A glass of tej, the honey wine, comes with it. On a seven-to-nine hour day that is worth more than the price difference suggests.
How long a connection does it need?
